Grosvenor 2nds 36

Omagh 3rds 3

The third team came down to earth on Saturday when they were outplayed in Belfast by Grosvenor RFC. On a rain soaked pitch the team seemed listless and never really got going against an unbeaten team who played the better team game. Grosvenor opened their account when interpassing down the narrow side saw their right wing score an unconverted try and 10 minutes later passing along their backs resulted in a second try converted for a 12 point lead. Omagh had their moments of position and attack but all their efforts came to nothing mainly due to lack of variety in attack. Before half time Grosvenor scored a third try again converted for a half time lead of 19 points. Omagh at this stage had Les Monteith off for a shin injury and a head injury to Alan Heaney saw him needing bandaged before returning to field.

Omagh lifted their game in second half and enjoyed considerable more possession and attacked the home line frequently and finally got on scoresheet with a Ryan Scott penalty and soon afterwards appeared to have scored a try when Darren McGirr crossed but referee said not. The Omagh backs tried several attacks but their play was too easily controlled by Grosvenor who broke out of defence and scored against run of play and soon afterwards a dropped pass by Omagh was accepted by Grosvenor who scored from resultant attack and gained a converted try. Near end when Omagh knew game was gone the home team ran through weak tackling to score final points with a try leaving Omagh losers by 36-3. This was a scrappy Omagh performance and resulted in their first league defeat of seson and first league loss in almost one year.

On Saturday the team travel to Monaghan and will hope to get back on winning ways and know by seasons end league could be close between a few clubs.

Omagh 4ths 5

City of Derry 4ths 19

In atrocious conditions on Saturday Omagh fourths put in their best performance of the season. Although defeated by 19 points to 5, they can now look forward to the rest pf the season with confidence. Omagh played the first half against the elements, and soon found themselves seven points down, after the big City of Derry forwards secured possession, and scored a converted try. Omagh spent the remainder of the first half defending their line, with some great work by Hemphill, Lagan and Bell keeping the half time score to 7-0.

Omagh started the second half attacking with scrum half McGowan putting in some good kicks to keep the ball in front of the forwards. However a break away by the City of Derry team allowed them to score an unconverted try to give them a twelve point lead. Omagh then put in a sustained period of pressure, but were unable to breach the City of Derry line. Omagh then had what looked like a good try disallowed, when play broke down on halfway and Keys kicked ahead and out paced the defence to score what everyone thought was a try, but the referee judged that he had knocked the ball on while grounding. Omagh continued to put pressure on the Derry defence and eventually Lagan forced his way over to bring the score to 12-5. Again Omagh attacked but the Derry defence held firm, and with the last play of the game Derry scored a break away try, to give them a flattering 19-5 victory. This was a much improved performance by the Omagh team and if they can keep this squad of players together it shouldn't be long before they get their first victory.
